I was reading Isaiah 58 this morning and this verse really convicted me:
13] “If you turn back your foot from the Sabbath,
from doing your pleasure on my holy day,
and call the Sabbath a delight
and the holy day of the LORD honorable;
if you honor it, not going your own ways,
or seeking your own pleasure, or talking idly;
(Isaiah 58:13 ESV)
We know that the Sabbath means something different for follower's of Christ than it did to the Israelite's. The Sabbath for us is entering into the rest of God, resting from our own works to obtain salvation.
[9] So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God, [10] for whoever has entered God's rest has also rested from his works as God did from his.
[11] Let us therefore strive to enter that rest, so that no one may fall by the same sort of disobedience. [12] For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
(Hebrews 4:9-12 ESV)
For us the Sabbath is every single day of our lives. We need to regard everyday as holy and unto the Lord. The verse above that says "
seeking your own pleasure, or talking idly" really convicted me that I am not here at work for myself and my own advancement. I am here because God put me here to do his pleasure, not my pleasure. Everyday of my life needs to be regarded as a Sabbath, holy unto the Lord. I am not to be looking for a way to escape, or to advance myself. I am also not to be talking to other co-workers without a conscious purpose to glorify the Lord and sprinkle my workplace with salt.
[6] Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.
(Colossians 4:6 ESV)
No idle talk. To live is to live for the pleasure of my master Christ, and to die is to die to myself and any ambition for my life. May my ambitions become the same as Christ's.
